WORKING PROCESS

PROJECT

INSITE is a research project of Significant National Interest (PRIN) funded by the Ministry of University and Research.

The project's focus is the study of cultural heritage and the enhancement of the territory that hosts it, through a multidisciplinary and innovative approach.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

The INSITE project considers the peculiarities of geo-paleontological resources, presenting them as driving elements for the redevelopment and promotion of the territory, also with a view to sustainable tourism development. The project starts from the consideration that the study of paleontological heritage requires new interpretative perspectives, and this change primarily concerns the meaning of its enhancement. Based on this consideration, the project develops in two main phases: a knowledge phase aimed at identifying a shared informational base among the various competencies involved, and an action phase aimed at creating a decision-support tool for the enhancement of geo-paleontological areas. The project focuses on two specific geo-paleontological sites in Campania: “Ciampate del Diavolo” and “Pietraroja”. Both sites are characterized by the presence of internationally significant locations.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

  • Ensure the correct development of project activities through the integration of various scientific expertise.
  • Structure a shared method for the study of paleontological processes and for understanding the territorial system of the areas they pertain to.
  • Develop a method for the digitization of the sites and for the virtual reconstruction of paleo-environments.
  • Identify a synthetic index of the accessibility of the study area.
  • Systematize the collection of finds related to the points of interest through an online, searchable database.
  • Promote initiatives to engage local communities in defining shared development and territorial use hypotheses.
  • Assess the potential of the study areas for slow and sustainable tourism.
  • Implement dissemination and communication actions for the developments of the project.

RESULTS:

RS1 > Technical Reports on new interdisciplinary methodological approaches

RS2 > Bibliographic documentation collection of the study areas

RS3 > Data collection and processing protocols for site digitization and virtual reconstruction of paleo-environments, with the development of apps using immersive technologies (AR/VR)

RS4 > Definition of the Synthetic Territorial Index (ITS), considering the attractiveness, accessibility, and current tourist flows of the sites

RS5 > Comprehensive dataset of the site finds, 3D model of some fossil specimens

RS6 > Development of maps for the long-term enhancement of the sites' potential in the territorial context

RS7 > Meta-project for the Integrated Territorial Development Plan

RS8 > Communication plan, publications in scientific journals, organization of study days and Living Labs, dissemination of project results at national and international scientific and outreach events.
